Weekly Devotional

Luke 6:32
32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.”

What does it mean to love others? How do we love others? Love is more than just a feeling we have; it’s a way of relating to others. When we love someone, we seek their welfare. We try to give them a fuller life, to help them get a leg up in life, to offer them comfort when they grieve, to be truthful with them so that they can be a better person.

And that’s pretty easy on the surface of it. “Love one another” is how we often distill Jesus’ entire teaching. It’s easy to love your neighbor who helps dig your car out of a snow bank, or even the anonymous neighbor far away who is just trying to live out their Christian vocation. But here, we see Jesus reminding us that loving those who love us in return is something so simple even a dyed-in-the-wool unrepentant sinner can do. We, as Christians in the world today, are called to do more.

What does it look like to love the neighbor who hates you? What does it look like to love the neighbor who steals your newspaper? Or the neighbor who cuts you off in traffic? What does it look like to love the neighbor who plots to shoot up your school or embezzle your 401(k)? Loving those neighbors is much harder.

Impossible, in fact, if it were up to us.

But Jesus calls us to be more than that. Jesus blesses us to be a blessing to the world, to show a different way of interacting. Where the world sees hatred met with hatred, and violence met with violence, where vengeance is so run-of-the-mill that there have been a million movies and novels made based solely on revenge fantasies as their plot, Jesus calls us to love. Jesus calls us to return love for hatred, to repay theft with generosity, to shine a light where darkness surrounds.

And we can start on our way to living in this kingdom ethic because we have the hope of the resurrection, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and the promise of the community of God. May we all start loving even those who hate us, and turn this broken world around by the power of God’s own love, little by little, until all things are made new.
